The Heat Controller

On the third hour of the twenty-fifth day of the year of Hoth, people in the streets of Trigan City began suddenly to act in a most remarkable manner. Aaaaah! The cold! The icy cold! What’s happening to us? Within instants, ice was forming everywhere. Get under cover, before we all freeze to death! Help me with this old man before he perishes. Down in the harbour, the sudden and fantastic fall in temperature froze the sea. Ships were crushed in the grip of the mountainous ice formations. The Trigan Bay bridge, weighed down by the sudden addition of the ice mass, sagged and broke . . . . . . with disastrous results! At noonday, the temperature rocketed back to normal and the streets of the city ran deeply with melted ice. It’s unbelievable! Fantastic!
The Emperor Trigo summoned an Imperial Council meeting, to discuss the strange disaster. Peric, Elekton’s top scientist, gave his opinion. It is my theory that the phenomenon of the falling temperature had no natural cause. Are you suggesting, Peric, that it was caused deliberately? I am, Majesty! I believe that a person or persons unknown have discovered a means to control the magnetic field of this planet, and consequently control the weather and climate. I do not have to remind you that such total command over life on Elekton makes this person or persons virtual dictators. I am convinced, however, that the source of this magnetic power can be detected from the air. So I have devised a piece of equipment which can be carried in an ordinary air craft. The great silence was interrupted by Janno, the Emperor’s nephew. I’ll do it! I’ll fly the detector craft! I half guessed that my young friend would volunteer! Two days later, Janno took off in his specially-equipped air craft. His task, to circumnavigate the planet at zero height, searching for the source of the sinister power. That same day, totally without warning . . . it happened! Aaaaah! The heat, the heat! I must have water! All the continent of Victris lay under a searing heat wave! The temperature rose to dizzy heights. In the great square of Trigan City, people staggered to the fountains, trying to slake their thirsts in the overheated waters. We are all going to die! No one can live through this heat!

The Food of the Gods (continued . . .)

Janno recovered consciousness, to find himself totally paralysed. Peric, you . . . you’ve got to listen to me. I am all attention. To begin with, you will explain your motives for attacking the Air Fleet base and causing such havoc ! Janno told all. Peric listened with growing amazement and horror . . . Are you telling me that these . . . mere children are capable of all these things ? I swear it, Peric ! They speak of making themselves masters of Elekton, and they feast off what they call the food of the gods ! Presently, the feeling came back into the young man’s limbs. We must go to the Emperor at once. Yes ! I’ve seen what they’re capable of, Peric. At that very moment, the boys were chatting with the soldiers of the Trigan armoured corps. Right, lads. We’ve shown you how to work the controls, what else do you want to find out ? I think we know all we need to know . . . Strike ! Aaaaaghh ! Start up your war-machines. Surround the city from all sides, then close in, shooting as you go !
Disaster was about to envelop the heart of the Trigan Empire. Yet another peril threatened. A herd of zargots, savage killers of the Vorg plains, came upon some of the alien plants and ate the fruit. The effect of eating the food of the gods was to increase their normal strength and killing-instinct a hundredfold. The news spread like a forest fire through the small villages and townships bordering the plains. The zargots are coming ! The maddened beasts tore through the streets. They are now heading for . . . Trigan City !

The Food of the Gods (continued . . .)

Again and again, the fighting-craft came in with guns blazing. Open fire on him ! The defenders never had time to strike back. Then the attacker streaked off. You’ll pay for this day’s work, Janno—you foul traitor ! The news was brought to the Emperor Trigo. My own nephew, you say ? Is there no possibility of a mistake in the identification of the craft ? None at all, Imperial Majesty. It was Lord Janno’s craft—and he has caused havoc at the base ! That craft—or my nephew—are to be attacked and destroyed on sight. Yes, Imperial Majesty. Alone, Trigo could only ponder and grieve. Janno ! Why did you do it, lad ? Why ? . . . Why ?
At that same moment, Janno was watching his own craft coming in to land at outpost seven. How does he do it ? . . . It’s unbelievable ! He met the grinning face of the boys’ leader. I’ve just wiped out half your base. Not bad for a beginner-pilot, eh ? But—I only showed you the basic controls, with someone prodding me in the back with the muzzle of a gun. If I’d guessed that you could have even got it up into the air . . . How could you have guessed . . . about us ? Something has happened to us. Not only has our physical strength greatly increased, but our mental powers also. We are super-creatures ! A pity you will not be around to see us masters of Elekton, Janno ! Eliminate him ! Janno saw the weapon coming up on aim. He ducked . . . Aaaaagh ! Get him ! Shoot him down ! Janno ran for his life. Feet, don’t fail me now !
